How do you choose an SEAI-registered EV Chargers installer?
Start by confirming the installer is a registered electrician (Safe Electric). Get at least three quotes that include the charger unit, installation, and any fuse board upgrades. Choose a smart charger that suits your electricity supply and parking setup. If you have solar panels, pick a solar-compatible charger like the Zappi to charge for free during the day.

Frequently Asked Questions About EV Charger Installers
The SEAI offers a grant of up to €300 towards the purchase and installation of a home EV charger. The grant applies to new and second-hand electric vehicles. You must use a registered electrician (Safe Electric) for the installation. The charger must be a dedicated EV charging unit — a standard 3-pin plug socket does not qualify. The grant is available for homes built before 2011 and covers apartments through the separate Apartment Charger Grant scheme.
A typical home EV charger installation costs €800–€1,500 including the unit and installation. The most popular chargers are 7.4kW single-phase wallbox units from brands like Zappi, Ohme, Easee, and Wallbox Pulsar Plus. After the €300 SEAI grant, the net cost is usually €500–€1,200. Costs vary depending on the charger brand, whether your fuse board needs upgrading, and the cable run distance from your fuse board to the charger location.
A Charge Point Operator (CPO) is a company registered with SEAI that manages EV charging infrastructure. CPOs are required for the Apartment Charger Grant scheme — they visit the property, propose a technical solution, and handle billing, maintenance, and customer support on an ongoing basis. For standard home installations, you can use any registered electrician. Only applications listing a registered CPO are considered for the apartment grant.
There are three main options: a standard 3-pin plug (slow, 2.3kW, 8–12 hours for a full charge), a single-phase wallbox (7.4kW, 4–6 hours, most common for homes), and a three-phase wallbox (22kW, 1–2 hours, requires three-phase supply). Most Irish homes have single-phase electricity, so a 7.4kW wallbox is the best option. Smart chargers like the Zappi can also divert excess solar energy to charge your car for free.
