Solar Panel Sizes and Dimensions in Ireland

Written by John RooneySolar Energy Editor

Solar panels have quietly grown over the last few years. The panels going onto Irish roofs in 2026 are longer and far more powerful than the ones fitted a decade ago, which means fewer panels for the same output. This page lists every panel size you are likely to be quoted, by wattage and by model, in millimetres, metres and feet, and shows how much roof space each system size needs. If you want to know how many panels your home needs rather than how big each one is, see how many solar panels you need.

Standard: 1722 × 1134 mm
21–22 kg each
~2.1m² of roof per panel

Quick Answer

Most solar panels fitted to Irish homes in 2026 measure about 1.72m × 1.13m (1722 × 1134 mm, or 5 ft 8 in × 3 ft 9 in), cover about 1.95m², weigh 21–22 kg and produce 430–460W. Newer 445–500W panels are a little longer at 1,762 or 1,800 mm, but every residential panel is the same 1,134 mm wide and about 30 mm deep. Allow roughly 2.1m² of roof per panel including gaps, so a typical 10-panel (4.4 kWp) system needs about 21m².

Solar panel sizes by wattage

Almost every residential panel sold in Ireland comes in one of three lengths. The width has settled at 1,134 mm across the main brands, so the length is what changes as the wattage goes up.

Sizes are length × width × frame depth. Exact figures vary by a millimetre or two between models, so your installer's datasheet is the final word. Commercial panels are rarely used on houses because of their size and weight; see commercial solar.

How much roof space do solar panels need?

Plan on about 2.1m² per panel. That covers the panel itself plus the small gaps between panels for the mounting clamps. Installers also leave a strip clear around the edges of the roof, so measure the usable area, not the whole roof.

PanelsSystem sizeRoof space needed
62.6 kWpAbout 13m²
83.5 kWpAbout 17m²
104.4 kWpAbout 21m²
125.3 kWpAbout 25m²
146.2 kWpAbout 29m²
167 kWpAbout 34m²

A typical 3-bed semi has 25–35m² of usable roof on its best face, enough for 12–16 panels. Most homes need fewer than that: work out your number from your bill with our guide to how many solar panels you need, or see what each size costs on our solar panel cost page. Short on space? A second roof face or a ground mount can take the rest.

Why solar panels have got bigger

A panel fitted before 2022 was typically 1,650 × 990 mm and produced 280–330W. Today's standard panel is about 20% larger by area but produces roughly half as much again, because the cells themselves are more efficient (22–25% now, against 17–20% then).

Panel typeOutput per m² of panelPanels for a 4 kWp system
Older panel (pre-2022) (280–330W)About 187 W/m²14
Standard residential (430–460W)About 228 W/m²9
Longer residential (445–500W)About 238 W/m²9
Longest residential (475–500W)About 240 W/m²9

The practical upshot: if your roof is tight, a higher-wattage panel gets you more output from the same space. Read more on solar panel efficiency.

How heavy are solar panels?

A residential panel weighs 20.5–22 kg, which works out at about 11 kg per square metre of roof before the mounting rails. A typical pitched Irish roof carries that comfortably, and your installer checks the roof structure as part of the survey. A 10-panel system adds a little over 200 kg spread across the whole roof.

Flat roofs are the exception to watch: panels there usually sit on weighted (ballasted) frames, which adds load. See solar panels for flat roofs.

Solar panel size FAQs

What size are solar panels in Ireland?

Most panels fitted to Irish homes are about 1722 × 1134 mm (1.72m × 1.13m), cover about 1.95m² and produce 430–460W. Newer 445–500W panels are 1,762 or 1,800 mm long. All residential panels are 1,134 mm wide and about 30 mm deep.

How big is a 440W solar panel?

A 440W panel such as the Jinko Tiger Neo or JA Solar DeepBlue 4.0 Pro measures 1722 × 1134 × 30 mm, which is 5 ft 8 in × 3 ft 9 in, and weighs about 21.5 kg.

How big is a 500W solar panel?

A residential 500W panel is 1,762 × 1,134 mm (Aiko Neostar 3P54) or 1,800 × 1,134 mm (Longi Hi-MO X10), about 2.0m², and weighs 20.6–21.6 kg. Older 500W+ panels were commercial-sized and much bigger, so check the model if a quote mentions 500W.

What size is a solar panel in feet?

A standard 1722 × 1134 mm panel is about 5 ft 8 in long and 3 ft 9 in wide. The longer 1,762 mm and 1,800 mm panels are 5 ft 9 in and 5 ft 11 in long, at the same width.

How much roof space do I need for solar panels?

Allow about 2.1m² per panel including gaps. A typical 10-panel 4.4 kWp system needs about 21m² of usable roof, and a 14-panel system about 29m².

How much does a solar panel weigh?

A residential solar panel weighs 20.5–22 kg, or about 11 kg per square metre. Commercial 580–620W panels weigh 27–32 kg.
