Electricity and gas prices rise by up to 9.4%. The new-customer 24-hour rate we track goes from 29.85c to 30.45c/kWh and the urban standing charge from €265.01 to €278.27. source

CRU-approved 2026/27 network charges add about €41.25 a year (€3.44 a month) to a typical domestic electricity bill after the regulator trimmed network revenue allowances by €138 million. Every supplier passes these charges through. source

Which electricity tariff is cheapest in Ireland right now?
For a typical home using 4,200 kWh a year on a 24-hour meter, SSE Airtricity's Electricity Top Discount 24h (30% off) is the cheapest plan we track at 28.79 c/kWh and an estimated €1473 a year including the standing charge. Energia is next at €1519. New-customer discounts usually last 12 months, after which the rate reverts to the supplier's standard tariff.
What types of electricity tariff are there in Ireland?
Three main types. A 24-hour tariff charges one rate all day and works on any meter. A day/night tariff, which needs a smart meter or a night-saver meter, charges a lower rate overnight and a higher rate by day. A smart time-of-use tariff, which needs a smart meter, splits the day into day, night and peak rates, often with an extra cheap window for EVs or heat pumps. Dynamic tariffs that follow the wholesale price half hour by half hour are the newest option.
What is a standing charge and why does it vary?
The standing charge is a fixed daily fee for being connected, charged whether you use any electricity or not. It covers network costs and is set by each supplier, which is why it ranges from €219.22/year to €342.69/year across the plans we track. Low-usage homes should weight it heavily; high-usage homes, such as those with a heat pump or an EV, should weight the unit rate instead.
Can I switch electricity supplier if I have solar panels?
Yes. Every supplier is required to offer a Clean Export Guarantee tariff for exported solar, and you can switch as normal. Rates currently range from 15.20 c/kWh to 19.50 c/kWh, with SSE Airtricity paying the most. You re-register your microgenerator with the new supplier using your NC6 confirmation and MPRN.
How often do Irish electricity tariffs change?
Several times a year now. Suppliers announce standard-rate changes with 30 days notice, and new-customer discounts move more often than that. The price change log on this page lists every announced change we have verified on a supplier's own site, with the date it takes effect. Rates on this page were last verified on 12 Sep 2026.
