BYD (Build Your Dreams) is a Chinese conglomerate best known for electric vehicles and batteries. They also manufacture solar panels and battery storage systems. Here's our independent review of BYD solar panels, including a key warranty concern, and how they compare to Jinko and JA Solar.

Who Are BYD?
BYD (Build Your Dreams) Company Limited was founded in 1995 in Shenzhen, China. They are a massive conglomerate and the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer. BYD's solar panel division draws on decades of battery technology expertise.
In Europe, BYD is far better known for its Battery-Box home batteries (sold through the distributor EFT-Systems) than for its panels. BYD solar panels are rarely installed in Ireland, and there is no BYD panel, battery and EV charger bundle sold here. If you want to check BYD's bankability status, look it up on the current Bloomberg NEF Tier 1 list rather than relying on an installer's claim.

The MGK-36 (425W to 455W) is the realistic BYD option for a 440W-class Irish home roof. Figures below are from BYD's MGK-36 monofacial datasheet, for the 440W version.

At 2094mm long, the MGK-36 is roughly a third of a metre longer than the 1.7m-class panels most Irish installers fit, so fewer may fit on a small or hipped roof. Mono PERC is also the older cell technology: the N-type TOPCon panels now standard in Ireland are more efficient and lose less output in warm weather.

BYD Warranty: The Key Concern
12-Year Product Warranty
BYD only offers a 12-year product warranty on their solar panels. This is significantly shorter than the 25-year product warranty that many premium N-type panels now carry (the Jinko Tiger Neo 440W, JKM440N-54HL4R-B, carries 25 years). Manufacturing defects discovered after year 12 are not covered.
25-Year Power Warranty
The MGK-36 carries a 25-year linear power warranty. Many N-type panels now offer 30 years (BYD's own bifacial MLTK-36 does too). The shorter product warranty also reduces the practical value of the power guarantee, since a faulty panel after year 12 is your problem.
Our view: The 12-year product warranty is BYD's biggest weakness for solar panels. For a product expected to last 25–30 years, having product defect coverage for only 12 years is a notable downside compared to competitors.

Verdict: Jinko's Tiger Neo is the stronger panel for an Irish home: higher efficiency from newer N-type cells, a better temperature coefficient, and far more installers who stock and support it. Neither panel has a special pairing with any battery, so a BYD Battery-Box works just as well with Jinko panels as with BYD ones.
