What size solar battery do you need?

For most Irish homes with a 4–6kWp PV array, a 5–10kWh battery hits the sweet spot of self-consumption uplift versus cost. Larger batteries help only if you have heat-pump heating, EV charging, or a dynamic tariff (e.g. half-hourly pricing) that you want to arbitrage.

Household profileRecommended batteryWhy
2–3 person home, gas heating, no EV5–6kWhCovers a typical evening of imports without paying for unused capacity.
3–4 person home, gas heating, one EV9–10kWhAllows overnight EV top-up using cheap-rate imports stored during the day.
Heat pump home, no EV10–15kWhHeat pumps run shoulders & overnight. Larger battery shifts more of that to solar/cheap-rate hours.
Heat pump + EV + dynamic tariff15–25kWhMaximum self-consumption + tariff arbitrage. Sigenergy or stacked BYD/Pylontech systems suit best.

Solar battery price comparison (supplied & installed)

Typical 2026 supplied-and-installed pricing for residential batteries at 0% VAT, paired with a compatible hybrid inverter. Add the inverter cost (€1,000–€2,000) if not already installed.

What should you look for in a solar battery?

LFP Chemistry

LFP (lithium iron phosphate) is the current standard. Safer, longer cycle life (6,000+ cycles), and deeper usable capacity (90–100% DoD) than older NMC chemistry.

Usable vs Nominal Capacity

“Usable” is what you actually get to discharge. Modern LFP packs allow 90–100% DoD. A 10kWh nominal pack at 95% DoD gives 9.5kWh usable.

Round-Trip Efficiency

How much energy you get back out vs put in. Quality LFP systems hit 95–97%. Anything below 92% is dated.

10-Year Warranty Minimum

Standard warranty is 10 years and 60–70% capacity retention. GivEnergy offers 12 years, Enphase 15 years. Read the throughput cap (often 35–50MWh).

Inverter Compatibility

Some batteries lock you to one inverter brand (Huawei Luna2000 needs SUN2000). Others (BYD, Pylontech, Dyness) work across multiple hybrid inverter brands.

Blackout / Backup Capability

Not all batteries can power your home during a grid outage. Tesla Powerwall, Sigenergy, GivEnergy All-in-One and Enphase IQ8 support whole-home backup with a transfer switch.

FAQ: Solar Batteries in Ireland

What is the best solar battery brand in Ireland?

By install volume, Huawei Luna2000 is the most-installed battery in Ireland (because Huawei dominates inverter market share). By brand recognition, Tesla Powerwall 3 wins. By value, BYD, Pylontech, and Dyness offer the most kWh per euro. Sigenergy is the fastest-growing premium all-in-one system.

Are solar batteries worth it in Ireland?

Yes, in most cases. A 5–10kWh battery typically lifts self-consumption from 30–55% (PV-only) to 70–90%, saving €300–€600/year for a 4kWp system. Payback is 8–12 years, faster if you adopt a dynamic tariff or have a heat pump/EV. Without a battery, exported solar earns only ~20c/kWh via CEG; consumed solar saves the full retail rate (~32c/kWh).

What size battery do I need?

For most Irish homes with a 4–6kWp PV array, 5–10kWh is the sweet spot. Heat pump homes benefit from 10–15kWh. Homes with EV + heat pump + dynamic tariff can justify 15–25kWh.

Can I add a battery to an existing solar PV system?

Yes. Options are: (1) AC-coupled retrofit (Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ Battery, GivEnergy AC), bolts onto your existing inverter; (2) Replace string inverter with a hybrid + DC-coupled battery, more efficient long-term but costs more upfront.

How long do solar batteries last?

Modern LFP batteries last 10–15 years (6,000+ cycles to 80% capacity). Warranties typically guarantee 60–70% capacity at year 10. With one cycle per day, that's 15–20 years of useful life.

Are home batteries safe?

Yes. LFP chemistry (used in all batteries listed here) is fundamentally non-flammable. Unlike older NMC packs, LFP cells do not undergo thermal runaway. They include a battery management system (BMS) for over-current, over-voltage, and over-temperature protection.
