One-off rural houses dominate Mayo's housing stock

Mayo has one of the highest proportions of detached one-off rural houses in Ireland. These properties typically have large, unshaded roofs with full south-facing exposure and no neighbouring buildings blocking light. This makes Mayo an excellent county for solar despite its lower irradiance — the installation conditions are often better than cramped urban settings in Dublin or Cork. Ground-mounted systems are also practical on larger rural sites where roof orientation isn't ideal.
