Gaeltacht areas and one-off rural housing

Donegal has Ireland's second-largest Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) area after Galway, including Gweedore, the Rosses, and Fanad. These areas have high concentrations of one-off rural houses, many built from the 1970s onwards with large south-facing roofs. The detached, unshaded nature of these properties makes them excellent candidates for solar despite the county's lower irradiance. Community energy schemes have been discussed in several Donegal Gaeltacht areas, though most installations to date remain individual household systems.
