Solar Battery Grant Ireland: the €600 SEAI Battery Grant
Ireland has a solar battery grant again. From 6 October 2026 SEAI pays a flat €600 toward a home battery of 5 kWh or larger. This page covers who qualifies, how it works with the solar panel grant, and how to apply.
Quick Answer
Yes. From 6 October 2026 SEAI pays a flat €600 grant toward a home battery of 5 kWh or larger. The home must have been built and occupied before 2025 and must not have had a battery grant before. You can claim it with the €1,800 solar PV grant in one application (€2,400 in total) or on its own, including for a battery added to existing solar panels. You need a grant offer before work starts and an SEAI-registered solar PV company.

Who qualifies for the battery grant?
The grant is tied to the property, not to your income. There is no means test.
You qualify if:
- You own the home (private landlords and owner management companies can apply too)
- Your home was built and occupied before 2025
- The battery is 5 kWh or larger
- No battery grant has been paid for the home before
- You have a grant offer from SEAI before work starts
- An SEAI-registered solar PV company fits the battery
You do not qualify if:
- Your home was built in 2025 or later
- The battery is smaller than 5 kWh
- A battery grant was already paid for the home
- The battery was bought or fitted before the grant offer

Battery grant plus solar panel grant: up to €2,400
If you are installing solar panels and a battery at the same time, you apply for both grants in a single application. The solar PV grant is worked out on the size of the solar system; the battery grant is a flat €600 on top.
| What you install | Solar PV grant | Battery grant | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solar panels (4 kWp or more) with a 5 kWh+ battery | €1,800 | €600 | €2,400 |
| Solar panels only (4 kWp or more) | €1,800 | — | €1,800 |
| Battery only, 5 kWh+ | — | €600 | €600 |
The solar PV grant is €700 per kWp for the first 2 kWp and €200 per kWp for the next 2 kWp. See the SEAI solar grant guide for the full rates.
Adding a battery to existing solar panels
You do not have to be installing solar panels to claim. SEAI allows the battery grant on its own, so a battery added to a solar PV system you already have qualifies, including where the solar PV grant was paid on that system in the past.
The same rules apply: a battery of 5 kWh or larger, a home built and occupied before 2025, no earlier battery grant for the home, and a grant offer before the installer starts. If you already have a solar PV grant application in progress, you do not need to amend it: submit a new application for the battery through the SEAI portal. Where the home has solar PV, SEAI requires a post-works BER for the battery. Our battery guide explains how a battery is added to an existing system.
How to apply for the battery grant
- Get quotes from SEAI-registered solar PV companies. Only a registered company can fit a battery under the grant. Check that the battery quoted is 5 kWh or larger.
- Apply to SEAI online. You need your MPRN, the number on your electricity bill. If you are also installing solar panels, include both in the one application.
- Wait for the grant offer. Do not pay for or start any work until SEAI has issued it.
- Have the battery installed.
- Claim the grant. SEAI pays the €600 to you after the work is complete and the paperwork is submitted. If the home has solar PV, this includes a post-works BER.
The application itself is made on SEAI's website; start from the SEAI battery grant page. Our SEAI grant application guide walks through the process step by step.

How much does the grant take off a battery?
The grant is the same €600 whatever the battery costs, so it covers a bigger share of a small battery than a large one. SEAI estimates a battery saves around €137 a year on its own, or up to €878 a year when installed alongside a 4 kWp solar PV system.

Fully funded batteries for some households
The €600 grant is open to every eligible home. Three other measures from 6 October 2026 go further for particular households:
- Warmer Homes Scheme: solar PV (up to 4 kWp) and a 5 kWh battery are now offered as standard under fully funded upgrades.
- Solar PV for the Medically Vulnerable: fully funded solar of up to 4 kWp with 5 kWh of battery storage.
- Homeowners on certain welfare payments: a grant of up to €9,000 toward solar PV (up to 4 kWp) and a 5 kWh battery.

Solar Battery Grant FAQ
Is there a grant for solar batteries in Ireland?
Yes. A €600 SEAI grant for home battery energy storage systems opened on 6 October 2026. It is a flat amount for a battery of 5 kWh or larger in a home built and occupied before 2025.
How much is the SEAI battery grant?
€600, as a flat rate. It does not rise with battery size, so a 10 kWh battery gets the same €600 as a 5 kWh battery. Claimed together with the maximum solar PV grant, the total is €2,400.
Can I get the battery grant if I already have solar panels?
Yes. The battery grant can be claimed on its own, so adding a battery to an existing solar PV system qualifies, even if you already received the solar PV grant. The home must have been built and occupied before 2025 and must not have had a battery grant before. If you have a solar PV grant application in progress, you do not amend it: you submit a new application for the battery.
Do I need a BER for the battery grant?
Yes, if the home has solar PV. SEAI requires a post-works BER for the battery where there is solar PV on the home.
Can landlords get the battery grant?
Yes. SEAI lists all homeowners, including private landlords, and owner management companies as eligible applicants.
What size battery qualifies for the grant?
The battery must be 5 kWh or larger. Batteries smaller than 5 kWh do not qualify.
Can I claim the battery grant and the solar panel grant together?
Yes. SEAI lets you apply for solar PV and a battery in a single application. The solar PV grant is up to €1,800 and the battery grant is €600, so the most you can receive is €2,400.
Is my home eligible if it was built after 2021?
Yes, as long as it was built and occupied before 2025. The battery grant and the solar PV grant both use the before-2025 rule from 6 October 2026. Homes built in 2025 or later are not eligible.
Can I buy the battery first and claim the grant afterwards?
No. You need a grant offer from SEAI before any work starts, and the battery must be installed by an SEAI-registered solar PV company. Work started before the grant offer is not covered.
Can I get a free solar battery?
Some households can. From 6 October 2026 the Warmer Homes Scheme and the Solar PV for the Medically Vulnerable scheme include a fully funded 5 kWh battery with up to 4 kWp of solar PV. Homeowners on certain Department of Social Protection payments can get a grant of up to €9,000 toward solar PV and a 5 kWh battery.
