SEAI Grant for Boiler Replacement: Oil & Gas Boiler Upgrades

Looking for an SEAI grant to replace your oil or gas boiler? There is no direct SEAI grant for replacing a boiler with another boiler. Instead, SEAI provides grants of up to €12,500 to replace your fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump — a more efficient, lower-cost alternative.

Quick Answer

There is no SEAI grant for replacing an oil or gas boiler with another boiler. The SEAI grant is specifically for switching to a heat pump: up to €6,500 (individual) or €12,500 (one-stop-shop, including €4,000 renewable heat bonus for replacing fossil fuel heating). The grant increased significantly from February 2026.

Is there an SEAI grant for boiler replacement?

Not for a like-for-like replacement. SEAI does not provide grants for replacing an oil boiler with a new oil boiler, or a gas boiler with a new gas boiler. The grant is designed to move Ireland away from fossil fuel heating. What SEAI does fund is replacing your boiler with a heat pump.

No grant for:

  • Replacing an oil boiler with a new oil boiler
  • Replacing a gas boiler with a new gas boiler
  • Boiler servicing or repairs
  • Like-for-like heating system replacement

Grant available for:

  • Replacing oil/gas boiler with a heat pump (€6,500–€12,500)
  • Heating controls upgrade (€700)
  • Central heating system upgrade (€2,000 via OSS)
  • Free replacement through Warmer Homes Scheme

SEAI heat pump grant: replace your oil or gas boiler

The SEAI heat pump grant is the main route to replacing your fossil fuel boiler. The grant increased significantly from 3 February 2026, making heat pumps much more affordable.

ComponentIndividual GrantOne-Stop-Shop
Heat pump unit€6,500€6,500
Central heating system upgrade€2,000
Renewable heat bonus (replacing fossil fuel)€4,000
Total maximum€6,500€12,500

The €4,000 renewable heat bonus is specifically for replacing a fossil fuel heating system (oil or gas boiler) with a heat pump. This bonus is only available through the one-stop-shop route. The €2,000 central heating upgrade covers upgrading radiators or installing underfloor heating to work efficiently with the lower flow temperatures of a heat pump.

Replacing your oil boiler

Oil boilers are the most common heating system in rural Ireland. Switching to a heat pump saves money and removes your dependence on oil deliveries:

Lower running costs

Heat pumps are 3–4 times more efficient than oil boilers. Typical annual heating costs drop from €2,000–€3,000 (oil) to €800–€1,200 (heat pump).

No more oil deliveries

No oil tank, no fluctuating oil prices, no risk of running out mid-winter. Heat pumps run on electricity, which can be offset with solar panels.

Grants up to €12,500

Through a one-stop-shop, you can get €6,500 for the heat pump + €4,000 renewable heat bonus + €2,000 for heating system upgrade.

Replacing your gas boiler

Gas boilers are common in urban areas. While gas is currently cheaper to run than oil, Ireland is phasing out fossil fuel heating under the Climate Action Plan.

Gas boiler ban coming for new builds

The EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) will phase out fossil fuel boilers in new buildings. Ireland's Climate Action Plan targets a ban on new fossil fuel heating installations. Switching to a heat pump now future-proofs your home and increases its value.

The same SEAI heat pump grants apply whether you're replacing an oil or gas boiler. The €4,000 renewable heat bonus (through OSS) applies to any fossil fuel system replacement.

Heating controls grant

SEAI provides a €700 grant for upgrading your heating controls. This is often done alongside a boiler replacement or heat pump installation and includes:

  • Programmable thermostat
  • Time clock and timer
  • Thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
  • Zone controls for different areas of the house
  • Smart heating controls

The heating controls grant can be combined with any other SEAI grant in the same application.

Free boiler replacement: the Warmer Homes Scheme

If you receive Fuel Allowance or other qualifying welfare payments, the SEAI Warmer Homes Scheme can provide a completely free heating system upgrade, including heat pump installation in some cases.

The Warmer Homes Scheme covers all costs — there is nothing to pay. It includes insulation, heating upgrades, draught-proofing, and ventilation.

Boiler Replacement Grants FAQ

Is there an SEAI grant for replacing an oil boiler?

Not for replacing an oil boiler with another oil boiler. SEAI provides grants of up to €12,500 for replacing your oil boiler with a heat pump. The grant covers the heat pump (€6,500), central heating upgrade (€2,000 via OSS), and a €4,000 renewable heat bonus for replacing fossil fuel heating (OSS route).

Is there an SEAI grant for replacing a gas boiler?

The same heat pump grant applies — up to €6,500 individually or €12,500 through a one-stop-shop. There is no SEAI grant for replacing a gas boiler with another gas boiler. The grant specifically supports switching from fossil fuel to renewable heating.

How much is the SEAI heat pump grant?

The SEAI heat pump grant is up to €6,500 for the heat pump unit (individual route). Through a one-stop-shop, you can get up to €12,500 total: €6,500 heat pump + €2,000 central heating upgrade + €4,000 renewable heat bonus for replacing fossil fuel heating. These rates apply from February 2026.

Can I get a grant to replace my boiler with another boiler?

No. SEAI does not provide grants for like-for-like boiler replacement. The grant programme is designed to move Ireland away from fossil fuel heating. The only funded replacement is switching to a heat pump. If you're on a qualifying welfare payment, the Warmer Homes Scheme may cover a free heating system upgrade.

Is a heat pump cheaper to run than an oil boiler?

Yes. Heat pumps are 3–4 times more efficient than oil boilers. Typical annual heating costs are €800–€1,200 with a heat pump compared to €2,000–€3,000 with oil. Combined with the SEAI grant, the payback period is typically 5–8 years.

Do I need to upgrade my radiators for a heat pump?

Not always. Heat pumps work at lower flow temperatures than boilers, so some radiators may need to be upsized. A heat pump installer will assess your home. The SEAI one-stop-shop route includes a €2,000 grant for central heating system upgrades (radiators or underfloor heating). See our heat pump guide for more detail.
