Generator Changeover Switch in Ireland: Cost, Types and the ESB Rules
Storm Éowyn left some homes without power for more than two weeks in 2025, and a generator is the usual answer for long rural outages. But a generator is only half the job: to run your lights, boiler, fridge and well pump through the house wiring, it has to be connected through a changeover switch. This guide covers the types, what they cost to fit, the ESB Networks rules and where solar and batteries fit in. For live outages, see the ESB power outage map.
Quick Answer
A changeover switch lets a generator power your house wiring during a power cut without feeding electricity back onto the ESB network. ESB Networks requires one for every standby generator, manual or automatic, fitted by a Registered Electrical Contractor. A manual switch costs roughly €250 to €600 installed; an automatic transfer switch roughly €800 to €1,150. Never plug a generator into a wall socket.
What a changeover switch does
Your house can take power from one source at a time: the ESB supply or the generator. A changeover switch sits between the meter and your fuse board and physically disconnects the house from the grid before it connects the generator. It is built so both can never be connected together.
That matters for two reasons. Without it, generator power flows out through your meter onto the line, where ESB crews are working on the assumption it is dead. And when the grid comes back, it would hit your running generator head on, which can damage it.
Manual, automatic or DIN-rail
Manual changeover switch
A rotary or lever switch with three positions: mains, off and generator. When the power goes, you start the generator and turn the switch.
Suits: Most homes and farms with a portable or standby generator
Cheapest option. The power stays off until someone flips it.
Automatic transfer switch (ATS)
Senses the outage, starts the generator (if it has auto-start) and moves the load across, then moves it back when the grid returns.
Suits: Holiday homes, farms with livestock systems, businesses, medical needs
Needs a generator with an auto-start input. Costs several times more.
Interlocked DIN-rail switch
A compact changeover that fits in the fuse board, with an interlock so both supplies can never be on at once.
Suits: Solar and battery or off-grid inverters switching between grid and inverter
Only fits if there is room in the board; check it is rated for your supply.
Most Irish homes have a single-phase supply and use a 2-pole switch, which switches both live and neutral. Three-phase supplies, common on larger farms and businesses, need a 4-pole switch. The switch must be rated for at least the current of the supply it carries; your electrician sizes it from your main fuse.
What a changeover switch costs in 2026
Few Irish electricians publish a price, so here is the cost built up from its parts. Switch prices are Irish retail prices including VAT; labour uses typical Irish electrician rates and job times. Treat the totals as a guide and get a written quote.
| Item | Manual switch | Automatic transfer switch |
|---|---|---|
| The switch | From about €70 | About €395 (100A) |
| Electrician's time | 3 to 5 hours at €45 to €80/hr | About a full day, including commissioning |
| Inlet socket, cable, enclosure | Allow €50 to €120 | |
| Typical total, fitted | €250 to €600 | €800 to €1,150 |
| If the fuse board needs replacing | Add €400 to €800 | |
The generator is extra. An automatic switch is only worth it if the generator has an auto-start input; otherwise someone still has to go out and start it. Costs go up for a long cable run to an outbuilding, a three-phase supply, or a board with no space.

Whole house or essential circuits?
A changeover switch at the meter moves the whole board to the generator. That is simplest, but a typical portable generator of 3 to 6 kW cannot run an electric shower, oven or immersion, so you have to keep those switched off during an outage.
The alternative is to move the essentials (lights, fridge and freezer, boiler controls and pump, broadband, a well pump, a few sockets) onto a small separate board that the switch feeds. It costs more to wire but makes a small generator go further and stops anyone overloading it by accident.
How it is installed
- The electrician checks your supply, main fuse and fuse board, and agrees which circuits the generator will run.
- The changeover switch is mounted between the meter and the board (or feeding a separate essentials board).
- A weatherproof inlet socket goes on an outside wall, so the generator plugs in outdoors and never runs inside.
- Earthing for the generator supply is set up, the system is tested on both supplies and certified.
- You, or your electrician, let your local ESB Networks office know the generator is there.
The ESB Networks rules
- A standby generator must always be connected through an appropriate changeover switch, manual or automatic.
- It must be installed by a Registered Electrical Contractor, in line with the National Wiring Rules.
- Tell the Customer Services Supervisor in your local ESB Networks office.
- Never connect a generator by a temporary means to your metering point.
- Never share one generator across more than one property.
- If ESB finds a property feeding power onto the network during an outage, it disconnects the whole property on safety grounds and only reconnects once a wiring certificate for the entire installation is submitted.
Solar panels, batteries and changeover switches
A standard solar system does not help in a power cut: the inverter switches itself off when the grid fails, by design. To use solar as backup you need a battery with a backup gateway or EPS output, and that hardware does the changeover job for you, automatically and usually in milliseconds.
ESB Networks applies the same rule to solar, batteries and EVs used for standby power: a Registered Electrical Contractor, and a changeover device that breaks the connection with the grid. Some backup gateways can also take a generator input, so a battery covers short outages and the generator covers the long ones.
| Generator + changeover switch | Solar battery with backup | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Lower | Higher; €600 SEAI battery grant |
| Runs for | As long as you have fuel | Hours; longer with sun or light loads |
| Switchover | Manual, or automatic with an ATS | Automatic |
| Day to day | Sits idle | Cuts your bills |

Changeover switches: FAQ
Do I need a changeover switch for a generator in Ireland?
Yes, if the generator will power any of the house wiring. ESB Networks says a standby generator must always be connected through an appropriate changeover switch, manual or automatic, installed by a Registered Electrical Contractor. Running appliances from extension leads plugged straight into the generator does not need one.
How much does a generator changeover switch cost to install?
For a manual switch, budget roughly €250 to €600 fitted: a switch from about €70, 3 to 5 hours of an electrician at €45 to €80 an hour, plus an inlet socket and cable. An automatic transfer switch is roughly €800 to €1,150. An old fuse board that needs replacing adds €400 to €800. Get a written quote.
Can I install a changeover switch myself?
No. ESB Networks requires standby generation to be installed by a Registered Electrical Contractor, and the wiring must comply with the National Wiring Rules. A wrong connection can back-feed the network and put ESB crews at risk.
Do I need to tell ESB Networks about my generator?
Yes. ESB Networks asks you to inform the Customer Services Supervisor in your local ESB Networks office. Your electrician will have the contact details.
Can I plug a generator into a socket to power the house?
No. This is back-feeding. It sends power out through your meter onto the network, where it can electrocute ESB crews repairing the line. If ESB finds a property feeding power onto the network during an outage, it disconnects the whole property and only reconnects once a Registered Electrical Contractor submits a wiring certificate.
What is the difference between a changeover switch and a transfer switch?
They do the same job. Changeover switch is the usual term in Ireland and the UK; transfer switch is the American term. An automatic transfer switch (ATS) is the automatic version.
Does solar work as a backup with a changeover switch?
Not on its own. A standard grid-tied solar inverter switches off in a power cut. To use solar or a battery as backup you need a battery with a backup gateway or EPS output, which has its own changeover built in. ESB Networks applies the same rule: a Registered Electrical Contractor and a changeover device that breaks the connection to the grid.
