The electricity flows to whatever appliances are running in your home at that moment.
The appeal is simple: no roof access, no major install, and a much lower cost than a full system. In Germany these kits are sold in supermarkets and the format is widely standardised. Ireland has not reached that point, and a plug-in unit sits awkwardly against rules that were written for fixed, professionally installed microgeneration.

Notification & registration
Strictly, microgeneration should be notified to ESB Networks (the NC6 form) and registered with your electricity supplier so you can be set up for the Clean Export Guarantee. A plug-in unit blurs this, but the underlying obligation still exists.
Safe installation
Any fixed electrical connection should be done by a qualified electrician. Mounting must be secure: a panel falling from a balcony is a serious safety risk that landlords and management companies will reasonably object to.

Renter and apartment checklist before you buy
Balcony solar is most attractive to renters and apartment owners who cannot touch the roof. That is exactly the group with the most boxes to tick first. Work through these before ordering a kit.
Permissions
- Get written permission from your landlord if you rent.
- Check the rules of your owners' management company (OMC) for apartments: balconies are often common areas with restrictions on fixtures.
- Confirm there is no lease clause against external fixtures or alterations.
Technical & safety
- Confirm the micro-inverter is EN 50549 compliant before you buy.
- Use a qualified electrician for any fixed connection rather than relying on a plug alone.
- Check the current ESB Networks and CRU position on notification for a unit this small.

Do balcony kits qualify for the SEAI grant?
No. The SEAI Solar Electricity Grant requires a standard system fitted by an SEAI-registered installer, with the associated paperwork and BER assessment. A self-installed plug-in balcony kit does not meet those conditions, so there is no grant support for it. That changes the value calculation: a grant-supported rooftop system on a house can work out better per euro than an unsupported balcony kit.

What about Lidl solar panels?
A lot of Irish interest in balcony solar traces back to Lidl. The supermarket sells a Parkside-branded plug-in balcony solar kit (a panel, micro-inverter, and mounting brackets) in its German and Austrian stores, where these kits are an established "Balkonkraftwerk" product sold for a few hundred euro.
As of August 2026, Lidl does not sell the Parkside solar kit in its Irish stores, and no Irish launch has been announced. If it does arrive here, everything on this page would still apply: the inverter must be compliant (EN 50549), the unit should strictly be notified to ESB Networks, and a self-installed kit would not qualify for the SEAI grant.
